dear ellie,

the other night, about an hour after i had tucked you & your sister in bed, & i swore you were sound asleep, i heard a noise. your daddy was working overtime at the station, so i was a lil' on guard if you will. i tiptoed down the stairs & noticed the light in your room was on. strange.

i opened the door, & there you were. in your closet. stripped out of your pjs. with a fresh pair of backwards underwear on. trying to put on those favorite ugly shoes that you love. audrey was dozing peacefully, even though you had loaded her bed to the brim with every toy in your room.

you looked at me & said, "hi mommy!" as you went about your shoe business. the blogger in me should've taken a picture, but in the moment, i wasn't amused.

i had the evening all to myself.
& i was watching a favorite movie.
& now you were in my bed hyper as can be.
& you stayed there until almost midnight jumping all over me.

but after i got over the fact that i was sharing my night alone with a toddler jumping in my bed, i was able to enjoy you. all to myself.

& that funny thing you do with your moon eyes when you try & be serious.
& how you won't let me do your hair anymore, so you just look like a lion everyday.
& how stubborn you are. man, are you stubborn.
& how you try & tickle my face nice & soft just like i tickle yours.
& how you kept rolling over just to look at me & make sure you were really still in my bed when you knew you were supposed to be in yours a long time ago.

i really like you, ellie joy. even though yesterday, & the day before, & the day before that, i swore i was gonna drop you off at the nearest orphanage & come visit around christmas time.
i think i'll keep you another year.
lucky you. er me.

love,
your mom

p.s. audrey just came up the stairs & gave me 3 kisses in a row for no reason at all. she didn't wanna be left out, ya know? i really like her too. but you already knew that. i'm so lucky. :)

i cannot even comment right now, i am in tears! "joy" really fits her doesnt it! i laughed at the orphanage part, because i believe it to be true. these are the times i can't wait to live there so i can be that orphanage! but mostly i cried! oh-the treasures you have, and the best part is, i know you know you that you are so blessed! and the part when she rolls over and looks at you in bed, i remember doing that! makes a kid feel extra special and loved! i am happy. and my heart smiles at the blessings God has given you! i'm so happy i get to do that! love you best friend!

ps. ya know-i guess grace kinda fits audrey to...if ya think about it...since maybe she isn't so graceful sometimes???!!!

omigosh, that is the most hilarious post ever. i am cracking up over here. her going about her shoe business. snort. and that you were going to drop her off at an orphanage. HA. Seriously hysterical. Finn always like to talk my ears off during the other's napping time...It's hard at first, till I realize one day he may not like to talk to me at all. Then I soak it all in and enjoy our special little time!

oh my, just MELT my heart. and so proud of you. this is something I'm attempting to do as well, instead of getting upset about losing MY time, but getting OVER it and appreciating the little things they do and the little sweet moments with them. but I'm with you on they'd be SO much cuter and SO much more appreciated if it WASN'T IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. =)

Awwww... this is so cute. :-) I'm sure its hard to get alone time with just one kiddo, when you have twins. And its obvious she loved that "mommy time" just as much as you did. You guys are the cutest.

It's a wonderful thing to be able to enjoy them and their amazing little personalites EVEN when it's not our choice. And you did just that. Wow, your girls are so so blessed, to have a mommy like you!!

thanks for makin' me smile today, molly june :)
